We Are Not Devo!

Cover albums usually suck. Claw Hammer usually sucks. This doesn't suck. It's a great garage punk reworking of one of the best albums ever.

Death in custody-Infected with rage

Death in custody-Infected with rage

I'm really into death in custody. The first time I saw them was in their hometown of Detroit, they opened for legendary 77 punk band the dogs. They are all trad skins, and really nice guys. Pretty mean stuff, good breakdowns, not overly slow or overdone breakdowns, really fast New York Hardcoreish riffs. Dig it. I can't want to bring them back here.

Check it out, good stuff.

FANG: landshark/where the wild things are+ a mi ga sfafas?

Before I go into details on these records, I might as well tell you a story. Fang started in 1981 in Berkeley, California. sleazy 80's hardcore punk, good stuff. They were a pretty unpredictable band live due to all of their reputations for partying and singer Sam Mcbrides (later changed his name to sammytown) notorious heroin addiction.

Which brings us to our story. Not only was Sam Mcbride a habitual drug user, he was also a drug dealer too. He had his girlfriend from out of town selling acid he would ship to her. One day he was on a heroin binge and went to go get the profits from her dealings and have a visit, he then realized she was ripping him off for money and some other problems.
"What I can say or will say is that a lot of money came up missing and when you play you have to pay."
So when he found out he grabbed the wire from his phone and choked her to death, then ran. He was arrested in Alaska and went to jail for 11 years. Some say "sweet deal" and some think he should still be there, that's neither here nor there.

I will on the other hand say he is a very nice guy, I booked them here in Columbus, the show was a mess for a lot of reasons, it's hard to get big bands to come here, and when you do everyone hears about their guarantee and refuses to go, even though you tell them it's your ass is on the line. Also sometimes the singer kills his girlfriend 20 years earlier and people refuse to go. Not to mention people refusing to go because the only bar that would allow this show to happen on such short notice after the first venue bailed was a notorious shithole. Either way, none of the guys in fang drank at all, weren't up tight about money or dicks (unlike capitalist casualties, who sing against that exact sort of behavior). He was generally a nice guy, I trusted them to crash at my house (they declined)...Who still has phones with strangle worthy wires anyway? Maybe my charger.....

Landshark/where the wild things are

Landshark/Where the wild things are is by far one of my top 5 favorite albums. Most cd's have those few songs you hate and skip every time, I have trouble figuring out which sweet song I want to play in this cd, they are all great. Some songs are better than others, but overall they are all good songs. All their hits are on here ("skinheads smoke dope", "I wanna be on tv", "the money will roll right in", "destroy the handicapped", "an invitation", and "friends like you", which is my personal favorite). A lot of songs are really fast and angry, and the other half are slower with more grunge sounding vibe. AMAZING ALBUM, if you can look passed what the singer did and just listen to sweet jams you might like it. IT'S MUSIC. You are not taking him to Sunday brunch with your grandma and he is not going to murder you with your cellphone, deal with it.

A mi ga sfafas?

A mi ga sfafas? (I believe is Hungarian for "give me a blowjob" or "suck my dick") is not anywhere near as good however. "The damaging dose" and "house wrecking party" are pretty sweet, nothing else on this album is worth it, but download it for those songs and erase the rest.....This album includes a god awful cover of "puff the magic dragon".......Crappy. I pretty just posted this and downloaded this because I love fang and I am bored anyway.

See ya next time, jerks.

Rollerball!

A one-off single recorded in 1976 featuring members of Jet Staxx and Elton Motello. Two perfect glam-punk stompers. Very heavily influenced by the New York Dolls and T-Rex. This single was virtually unknown for over 30 years until it starting popping up on various blogs last year, leading to a reissue earlier this year on Sing Sing Records. I suggest you go there right now and get your own copy!

X - Aspirations

For my first post, I thought I'd start with some classic Australian punk. Formed by ex-Rose Tattoo bass player Ian Rilen, X released this, their debut album, in 1979. With a combination of the hard-driving bass lines, perfect hooks and spastic post-punk guitar riffs, X created a unique sound that makes this album an original and memorable artifact of "murder punk" (for those who don't know, murder punk is the catchall term for the late 70s Australian punk scene).

Track List:
1. Suck Suck
2. Present
3. Simulated Lovers
4. Police
5. Revolution
6. Turn My Head
7. Good On Ya Baby
8. Delinquent Cause
9. I Don't Wanna Go Out
10. Lipstick
11. It Must Be Me
12. Coat Of Green
13. Waiting
14. Batman

Knapsack

I'm not even really sure how I stumbled across Knapsack. I've been really into 90's hardcore, emo, and screamo for the past few years, a decade a friend referred to last night as "the worst era for punk". Obviously I disagree, and amazingly, Knapsack stayed around for almost the entirety of the 1990's. They formed in 1993 in Davis, California, and broke up three records later, in 2000.

Sergie Loobkoff of Solea and Samiam joined on bass in 1997, shortly before the release of their second album, Day Three Of My New Life. The last record, This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now, was put out the next year, in 1998; and, personally, is still one of my favorite album titles of all time. Katherine The Grateful (sometimes spelled "Catherine", kinda like the Lifetime Katrina vs. Catrine thing...) is the first track, starting the album out perfectly and setting it up to be a quintessential 90's release.

Two things that are interestingly enough for me to mention here:
1. Blair Shehan, the singer, went on to form The Jealous Sound, who, in 2003, put out a record with the same name as the Cop Hugger tape I posted a few days ago.
2. MTV has a video for Effortless from Silver Sweepstakes and a bunch of streaming songs up on their site, for one reason or another.

Who Posts When

So far, there are eight people who will be posting on this blog. Eventually, we're going to each have our own days, but not everyone has decided when they want to post, so there will probably be a bunch of filler posts until we have a cohesive structure. As it is, these are the days people have committed to:

Tuesday - Matt Tard
Thursday - Ian & Kelsey
Saturday - Scotty
Sunday - Dave

Two Albums

The first album up is "Kill Them With Kindness" by Cop Hugger from Athens, Ohio. This is a band with Max Wheeler from Gnarly As I Wanna Be on vocals. Kinda dance-y, kinda angry, this is up for sale on both tape and cd on the GAIWB site. They played Berea Fest this year and are booking a ton of shows in the near future in Athens and Columbus sans bassist because he moved home for the summer.

Hot Cross was from Philly and broke up in 2007, but they're still one of my favorite bands. This is their first full-length and probably the best stuff they put out. Cryonics is melodic, scream-y, technical, and sorta cheesy at some points. Hot Cross definitely lives up to having members from Saetia and Off Minor, but still refrains from being just another screamo band.
